Special Kids Day at Conejo Valley Days

Once again the Zonta Club of Conejo Valley Area hosted a successful Special Kids Day event to the delight of 300+ developmentally challenged children. The children were treated to a day of carnival rides accompanied by a special volunteer who escorted them around the Conejo Valley Days Fair Grounds. Zonta Club members saw to it that the children were provided with hats, bottled water, lunches and snacks through the generous donations of time and food from local citizens, organizations and businesses, and the volunteers themselves received coffee, donuts, and bottled water.

Each child had the opportunity to have their photo taken around the grounds either on a ride, with one of the Shriner clowns, on a police motorcycle or in a police car to take home as a souvenir. Due to the larger number of students attending this year, we found ourselves seeking volunteers from many sources. Our club actively sought out volunteers at the Conejo Valley Days' Interservice Club Luncheon. We are especially grateful to the students from Thousand Oaks High School for committing their time to our event. Local clubs such as Thousand Oaks, Conejo Valley and Westlake Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis, Elks and many other service clubs, groups and individuals helped contributed time, food or money to our event. The Ventura County Fire Department and Sheriff Department and American Medical Response all provided vehicles and personnel for the children to explore and talk to Special thanks to Todd Stevenson, owner of Kay's Gourmet Catering for providing all the coffee for our volunteers and to J.D. Powers, McGraw Hill Companies, Shamrock Shows, Blue Cross of Conejo Valley and Adelphia for their support. We have so many sponsors and donors to thank.
